NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is the doorway for students who aspire to study any graduate medical course (MBBS) - Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, dental course (BDS), Bachelor of Dental Surgery or postgraduate course (MD / MS) in a reputed government or private medical colleges in India. National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for MBBS and BDS courses, will be carried out by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
This competitive examination has replaced the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and all the other individual MBBS exams conducted by different states and colleges. However, many colleges and institutes have taken a stay order this year and carried out private examinations for admission to their MBBS and BDS courses.
In agreement to the notification published in the Gazette of India back on 21st December, 2010, the Medical Council of India with the approval of the Central Government modified the regulations on Graduate Medical Education 1997 and made way for a Single Eligibility cum Entrance Examination for medical courses, namely, (NEET) National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.
The Dental Council of India also refurbished the BDS Course Regulations 2007 and announced in the Gazette of India Extraordinary dated 31st May, 2012 that the admission to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery in each academic year will be done through National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET).
The Dental Council of India and the Medical Council of India have announced that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for to shortlist candidates for MBBS and BDS Courses.
NOTE:The All India Pre- Medical Test also referred to as AIPMT, that was held on May 1, 2016, shall be considered as the first phase of the NEET. Students who registered for Phase One will be given a the chance to sit for the second phase of NEET which would be conducted on July 24, 2016 but on the condition that they will have to give up their NEET Phase 1 score. The above dates are as per the order of Supreme Court.
NEET would be the only eligibility cum entrance examination to select candidates for admission to MBBS/BDS courses' each year. To be eligible for admission to MBBS/BDS Courses for a particular academic year, it will be essential for a candidate to attain minimum marks in 'National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test' conducted for the said academic year apart from obtaining minimum set marks in the qualifying examination. Just appearing for in NEET does not grant the right to a candidate for to get admission in MBBS/BDS Courses.
The admission to MBBS/BDS courses in any Medical Institute recognized for running MBBS/BDS Courses as per Indian Medical Council Act 1956 and BDS Course Regulations 2007 is subject to fulfilling the admission criteria, eligibility, medical fitness and such other criterion as has been prescribed by different universities and medical institutions.
NEET will consist of one paper with a total of 180 objective type questions (four options with single correct answer) from Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany & Zoology). These are to be answered on the specially devised machine-gradable sheet using Ball Point Pen only. The duration of paper shall be 03 hours.
She/he should be 17 years old at the time of admission or should be 17 years of age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year MBBS/BDS Course and is must be an Indian national.
The upper age limit for the candidates seeking admission under 15% All India Quota Seats is 25 years as on 31 st December of the year of the entrance exam. This upper age limit shall be relaxed by a period of 5 (five) years for the candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes/Other Backward Classes. Candidate must born on or between:
(a) 01.01.84 to 01.01.97 (SC/ST/OBC Category)
(b) 01.01.89 to 01.01.97 (Other Category).
Please Note: Students from Andhra Pradesh and J&K are NOT ELIGIBLE for the 15% all India quota seats as both these states had opted out of the All India Scheme ever since its initiation. Nevertheless, students from the states are eligible for 100% seats for MBBS/BDS in Medical/ Dental Colleges in the States of Andhra Pradesh and J&K.
QUALIFYING CRITERIA FOR NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY-CUM-ENTRANCE TEST: To be eligible for admission to MBBS/BDS courses for a particular academic year, a candidate must attain a minimum of marks at 50th percentile in 'National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test, held for the said academic year. In respect of General candidates with disability of lower limbs, the minimum marks shall be at 45th percentile and for the candidates from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes, the minimum marks shall be at 40th percentile.
The percentile will be based on the highest marks obtained in All-India common merit list in National Eligibility-cum Entrance Test for admission to MBBS/BDS courses. Any candidate who fails to secure the minimum eligibility marks mentioned above will not be eligible for admission to MBBS/BDS courses.

The Examination will be held for a duration of 3 hours. The question paper consists of a total of 180 multiple choice questions. The total weightage of the paper is 720 marks. The examination shall be held in both Hindi and English medium.
Each question will give you 4 marks if answered right and 1 mark will be is deducted for every wrong answer.
